Large National Bank Notes - APMEX offers a superb selection of National Bank Notes in large small sizes. First issued in 1863, National Bank Notes were used in all 48 states and the territories of Alaska, Hawaii and Puerto Rico until 1935. The large size notes were printed in $1, $2, $5, $10, $20, $50 and $100 denominations. There are numerous Large Size notes having been printed in 1863, 1875, 1882, 1902 and 1908, in Three Charter Periods.
Under Abraham Lincoln, Secretary of the Treasury Salmon P. Chase devised a system of nationally chartered banks. Individual banks purchased U.S. government bonds and deposited them with the comptroller. For up to 90% of the profit, the comptroller would authorize the production of notes with the individual bank’s name.
