The Old Boston National Bank (Charter #1015) of Boston, Massachusetts operated from 1865 until its closure in 1916, issuing National Bank Notes throughout its long history. Despite its relatively active issuance, surviving examples are scarce today, with only about twenty recorded in the census for certain issues. For its 1882 $5 Brown Back series, the bank’s production totaled approximately 25,792 sheets, which equals roughly 103,168 individual notes when multiplied by four per sheet. Although this production level is not extremely low, heavy redemption and attrition have left very few surviving examples available to collectors. As a result, notes from this charter remain highly desirable, especially in better condition, due to their historical significance and limited survivorship.
