Jefferson Nickels

APMEX offers a superb selection of Jefferson Nickels. Released in 1938, the Jefferson Nickel is the only current U.S. coin to be made in its original composition. Honoring Thomas Jefferson, the country’s third president, the Jefferson nickel is a familiar coin to many generations of Americans. In 1938 Felix Schlag designed the Jefferson nickel and won $1,000 for his efforts. His effort, which is still in production today, won over the submissions of 390 other artists. During World War II, the composition of the coins was changed to Silver so that nickel could be used to satisfy the demands for war materials.

For those interested in purchasing individual nickels to fill out their collections, the popular 1964-D Jefferson Nickel coins are a popular choice. These remain exceptionally inexpensive due to their large quantity that was produced.

Collecting Nickels from the U.S. Mint

Collecting nickels from the United States Mint offers a spectacular and tangible perspective on American history through historic designs that reflect the changing values of different eras. As you explore the rich history of U.S. Mint nickels, you might find that series like the Buffalo nickel add a new dimension to your collection. If you are building your nickel collection, consider exploring the APMEX collection of Buffalo nickels. The Buffalo nickel was issued from 1913 until 1938 and immediately preceded the Jefferson nickel. Collecting both of these issues provides a fascinating contrast that highlights the changes in American society at that time.
