2 Cent Pieces
APMEX offers a superb selection of 2 Cent bronze pieces. Issued in 1864, the 2 Cent Piece has the distinction of being the first coin to bear the inscription “In God We Trust.” During the Civil War, Americans on both sides of the war became more openly expressive about their religious beliefs, making the addition of this motto widely accepted. One of the most interesting coins in this series is the 1864 issue, which has Small and Large Motto varieties. The Small Motto is significantly more rare than the Large Motto variety, and can worth more than 10 times the price of the Large Motto. Minted between 1864 and 1873, 2 Cent Pieces played a critical role in providing small-denomination coinage during a period of economic upheaval.
Another important low-denomination piece of early American coinage is the U.S. Half Penny. As the smallest coin ever produced by the United States, it served a vital purpose in supporting commerce during the nation’s formative years. Both the 2 Cent Piece and the Half Penny showcase the ingenuity of the U.S. Mint in adapting to the economic needs of their times and remain cherished by collectors of historic American coinage.
