Boston Tea Party
The Boston Tea Party was a historic political protest that took place on December 16, 1773, in Boston, Massachusetts, during the period leading up to the American Revolution. It was a significant event in the colonists' resistance against British taxation policies and played a crucial role in the eventual fight for American independence. During this time, the British government had imposed various taxes on the American colonies without their consent, leading to widespread dissatisfaction and opposition among the colonists. One of these taxes was the Tea Act of 1773, which granted the British East India Company a monopoly on tea sales in the colonies and allowed them to sell tea at a reduced price, undercutting local tea merchants.

Between 7 and 10 p.m. on the night of December 16, 1773, a large group of men led by the Sons of Liberty boarded the ships in the harbor. Around 46 tons of tea were tipped into the Boston Harbor, nearly worth £10,000 in 1773. As a result, the British shut down the harbor and implemented the 1774 "Intolerable Act," also know as the Boston Port Act. This further enraged the colonists, hardening their resolve against the British, and sparking a series of events that led to the American Revolution in Massachusetts.
