The Dark Lord Sauron
Sauron was one of the Maiar similar to wizards like Gandalf, but he served as the top commander of Morgoth's armies, the greatest evil ever to threaten Middle Earth. Morgoth, also known as Melkor, was one of the 14 Ainur, powerful beings who helped manage the creation of the world. But he disrupted the music of Eru Iluvatar and created terrible evils. Sauron's service to Morgoth gave him tremendous power through knowledge of dark magic. Following Morgoth's banishment, Sauron hid from the other Valar to begin plotting his own conquest of Middle Earth.
When he resurfaced, Sauron appeared as a fair and wise teacher who offered his knowledge and skill to men, dwarves and elves to teach them how to create rings of power. After nine rings were created for men, seven for dwarves and three for the elves, Sauron secretly created a master ring that would control all of the others. His plans worked, but for the elves, who sensed his treachery and took their rings off before he could enslave them to his will.
