Buffalo
The Grand Buffalo is one of D.G. Smalling’s most notable collections, paying tribute to Native Americans that paved the way for future generations by entering public office in the United States. Using his signature single line style, Smalling renders an abstract form of a central plains buffalo, a symbol of prosperity and tradition. Color is added to the empty spaces to bring out the defining features of the buffalo. This unique single line style comes from Choctaw hieroglyphics.

DG Smalling
D.G. Smalling is an Oklahoma Choctaw native artist. He is most known for his unique one-line, continuous drawing technique. During his early years, Smalling and his family left Oklahoma to do missionary work overseas. They lived in Switzerland, Cameroon and South Africa, where he found a passion for art. Although Smalling had always been exposed to art, he considers this as the pivotal point in his artistic development. After finishing high school in South Africa, Smalling returned to Oklahoma to study at the University of Oklahoma, where he earned a political science degree.

Every piece Smalling creates is one continuous line. This style is his reapproach to hieroglyphic art from his Choctaw heritage. Over time, this has evolved into what is known as contemporary southeastern neo-hieroglyphics. Smalling uses graffiti materials to make paintings because although they are synonymous with defacement he wants to “make beauty out of it.” All his art depicts nature, life and happiness since his goal is to bring more joy into the world.
