The legend, taken from Book III of Horace's Odes, means, "the brave child was helped by the gods." It also reads "17 / 19 OCT. 1777. / 1781." The signature "DUPRE F." is engraved under the leopard's tail. The year "2023" and "RF" are also present.
  • Reverse: Depicting the left profile bust of a slender young woman as an American representation of Liberty. Her unbound hair fluttering in the wind, a staff topped by the cap of liberty resting on her right shoulder. She inspired Galle to engrave "French Liberty" for the monetary proof in 1792. Under the bust, one can see the signature of "DUPRE."

Dates of Humanity: Libertas Americana
"Libertas Americana" was a personal initiative of Benjamin Franklin. He therefore bore the costs alone. True to his altruistic ideals, he offered diplomatic tool to his country. On April 6, 1783, he sent a silver copy to the Grand Master of Malta, Emmanuel de Rohan-Polduc, with a request for protection for his fellow citizens landing in the ports of Malta. In a letter dated June 21, 1783, the Grand Master of Malta accepted his proposal after thanking him for his gesture and the quality of the medal in the following terms, "This monument to American Liberty has a distinguished place in my cabinet."
