The Background of Silver Panda Coins

When you receive your 1 oz Silver Pandas, one of the first features you will notice is the striking, memorable design. All coins feature a panda on the obverse, but the design changes from year to year. For example, 2011 featured a mother panda with her cub, while 2015 featured the animal leisurely gnawing on bamboo. On the reverse, the imagery always depicts the Hall of Prayer for Abundant Harvests in the Temple of Heaven, a landmark building in Beijing. Interestingly, Gold Pandas have the pandas on the reverse and the Temple of Heaven on the obverse, which is the opposite of the arrangement for their Silver counterparts.

At first, the coins were issued only as proof coins, and they were only .900 fine Silver. They also weighed less than 1 oz. In 1989, 1 oz Silver Pandas made of .999 fine Silver became available and they have remained popular since.
