The Lord of the Rings Films and The One Ring
Peter Jackson's adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien's "The Lord of the Rings" books came to fruition with the release of the first film in 2001. "The Fellowship of the Ring" established the fellowship and the great menace that Middle Earth faced from the land of Mordor and the Dark Lord Sauron. This film was a smash achievement and earned more than $897 million at the box office. Audiences were astonished by the beautiful lands of Middle Earth, fantasy creatures and endearing characters striving to overcome the obstacles they faced. Two other films would be released, "The Two Towers" and "The Return of the King," which pushed the limits of film effects with the creation of massive armies engaged in combat. "The Lord of the Rings" films are highly acclaimed as loving tributes to the source material and also an entertaining adventure for the viewer.

Perhaps the most notable component from "The Lord of the Rings" is The One Ring itself. The Dark Lord Sauron was one of the Maiar similar to wizards like Gandalf, only he served as the top lieutenant of Morgoth, the greatest evil that ever befell Middle Earth. Morgoth was one of the Valar, powerful beings who supervised the creation of the world, but Morgoth disrupted the music of Eru Iluvatar and created great evils. Sauron's service to Morgoth gave him tremendous power through knowledge of the black arts and following Morgoth's banishment, Sauron hid from the other Valar to begin plotting his own conquest of Middle Earth.

When he reemerged, Sauron presented himself to the peoples of Middle Earth as a fair and wise teacher who offered his knowledge and skill to men, dwarves and elves to teach them how to create rings of power. After nine rings were created for men, seven for dwarves and three for the elves, Sauron secretly created a master ring that would control all of the others. His plans worked, but for the elves, who sensed his treachery and took their rings off before he could enslave them to his will.

The combined forces of men and elves defeated Sauron after the ring was cut from his finger in the Second Age. "The Lord of the Rings" begins thousands of years later, when Sauron has once again rebuilt Barad-dûr and gained enough power to begin searching for the precious ring that Frodo's uncle Bilbo had found decades earlier. The story centers upon Sauron's ring of power and the events described are called "The War of the Ring." Frodo is charged with destroying the ring and sets forth with a fellowship to guide and protect him in his journey. In the end, the ring's destruction brings the story to its conclusion. This distinctive coin features the ring of power along with the dark elvish language of Mordor which reads, "One ring to rule them all, one ring to find them, one ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them." Get this one coin to rule them all and add it to your collection!
