Boone was once regarded as one of the country's first folk heroes. His military service during the French and Indian War was followed by a 1763 journey into Florida, which he had just acquired. Their time in Florida did not last long since Mrs. Boone did not appreciate the heat and humidity of the territory, so Boone started exploring Kentucky during 1769-1771.
In 1773, they attempted to establish a colony there, but were thwarted by Native Americans defending their land. He persisted for two years and eventually established Boonesboro in 1775. While Boone had issues with the Native tribes, he eventually made peace with Chief Blackfish of the Chillicothe tribe.
