A remarkable collaboration between Monnaie de Paris and Maison Lacoste pays tribute to a brand that revolutionized the practice of sport. This 1 kilo Gold shaped coin is part of the French Excellence series.

Coin Highlights:
  • Contains 1 kilo of .999 fine gold.
  • Extremely limited mintage of 12 coins.
  • This magnificent coin comes in a box with a certificate of authenticity from the Monnaie de Paris.
  • Obverse: Shaped as an alligator, with the animal holding a tennis ball in its mouth. Crafted with three textures: crocodile skin on the head, pique pattern on the body, and the pattern of a golf ball on the tail. The golf ball pattern pays tribute to Rene Lacoste's wife.
  • Reverse: In the background, lines resemble tennis courts along with the face value of the coin, manufacture year, and the year 1933, the year Maison Lacoste was created. Rene Lacoste's silhouette appears to be moving on the court while hitting a ball caught by the crocodile, thus creating a link between both sides of the coin.
  • Minted by Monnaie de Paris.

Lacoste 90th Anniversary
During a match played in the U.S. in 1923, 19-year-old Rene Lacoste was nicknamed "the crocodile" for his tenacity on the court. Embroidered from 1927 on a blazer and then on polo shirts, the stylized animal became the first visible logo on a garment. A man of many talents, blessed with a mind of steel, the champion won seven major singles tournaments and was a member of the victorious French team at the Davis Cup in 1927 and 1928. By shortening the sleeves of the customary shirt, he gave birth to the polo shirt. With this modern, light and universal wardrobe, he won over his fellow players and laid the foundations for the development of the Chemise Lacoste brand.

Monnaie de Paris
Founded in 1864, not only is Monnaie de Paris France's longest standing institution, but it is also the oldest enterprise in the world. Today, the mint strikes circulation coins for France, as well as beautiful gold and silver commemorative coin programs that are each intricately designed works of art. The mint is also home to a museum that hosts exhibitions, tours and workshops, and is the home of the Guy Savoy Restaurant.
