The historical Mamilla neighborhood was one of the first to be built outside the walls of the Old City of Jerusalem, in the area between Jaffa Gate in the Old City and the new city at the end of the 19th century. In its early years, Mamilla was a prosperous neighborhood for both Jewish and Arab tradesmen. On the ruins of the historical neighborhood, within the framework of a huge project developed by the real estate entrepreneur and visionary, Alfred Akirov, the Mamilla neighborhood was built anew. Designed by architect Moshe Safdie, the exceptional building project took about 30 years to complete. The new Mamilla neighborhood includes a prestigious residential area, luxury hotels and a unique shopping mall built along the main road that leads directly to Jaffa Gate, known as the "Mamilla Boulevard." Every tourist to Israel visits Mamilla Boulevard and cannot but be amazed by the historical buildings which have been accurately restored by numbered bricks that had been waiting for decades until finally being put in place as part of the newly reconstituted buildings.
