Understand influences on the price of Gold when buying Gold coins, rounds or bars.

Gold like that used in Mexican Gold coins has always been highly prized, dating back to ancient times. The price of Gold Libertad coins, and other Gold bullion, is influenced by a number of factors. Mexican Gold coins are not available at the Gold spot price, which is the price of unfabricated Gold. The price you pay for a Gold Libertad also includes the premium price, which accounts for fabrication costs, distribution costs, small dealer fees and any numismatic or collector value. Before fractional Gold coins and other bullion are minted, the raw Gold price is affected by a number of factors including central bank reserves, the value of the U.S. dollar, industrial and jewelry demand, and economic instability.

Understand numismatic value when deciding whether to buy Gold coins.

Gold Libertad coins are valued not only for their Gold content, but for their beauty, design and rarity. Most Libertads, including the 1/4 oz Gold Libertad, have very low mintages, so are consistently sought out by collectors who know they will possess a beautiful coin on top of the coin's rarity. Mexican Gold coins with numismatic value are legal tender coins that are collectible due to their history, rarity or aesthetic value. Gold coins, including fractional Gold coins, are priced higher if there is numismatic value attached to the coin and will be a certain percentage above Gold spot price.

The 1/4 oz Gold Libertad features culturally iconic Mexican imagery, showing the Angel of Independence statue and the Mexican volcanoes Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl.

Not so Random, but worth the risk.

Was this review helpful? Yes/ No

I still do not understand why people complain about getting a recent year coin, if the title clearly indicates RANDOM. That's the risk involved with these lower premium fractional gold coins. The ones I have purchased (separate orders) have all been 2016 and in BU condition. This is not a bad thing considering that these 'Random' coins sell for about 10$ less than the 2016s. With a very low mintage of only 1000, this is an absolute win, no matter what year you get. To some it may seem like APMEX is just trying to unload them by listing them as random, but just a couple years from now, these will be very sought after. and their value will only increase. Set up your alerts for this terrific fractional gold coin.

  • Pros
  • Value (low premium over spot)
  • Attractive Design
  • Collectible (lower mintage)
  • Easy to Sell
  • Mint Condition
  • Recognized Brand
  • Bottom Line
  • Yes, I would recommend this to a friend.

damaged coin

Was this review helpful? Yes/ No

I have been buying silver & gold from Apmex for nearly 5 years. I have always been happy with the products except in this case. I received a damaged coin sold as BU! It does not make sense to send a sell a damaged coin as uncirculated. Very disappointed ......

Very disappointed

Was this review helpful? Yes/ No

Just received this in the mail and was very disappointed. Although the listing did say that it could either be an Onza coin OR a Libertad, the photo just showed the Onza coin which gave me hope that the coin I received would indeed be the Onza. I think I understand why they use the Onza coin in the photo. The Onza coin is one of the most attractive gold coin designs for bullion coins and they tend to carry a premium. On the other hand, the gold Libertad coin is one of the weakest and most unattractive gold bullion designs that there is. I'm guessing they chose the photo of the Onza to front for the Libertad to help unload them. Won't take a chance on this again. Caveat Emptor.

  • Cons
  • Unattractive Design
  • Hard to Sell
  • Bottom Line
  • No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Merchant response: We're sorry to hear you are not satisfied with the Random selection of your order, as stated it would be in the listing. We will contact you shortly to offer a return.

Coin could have been little better

Was this review helpful? Yes/ No

Of the 19 Gold coins received to date this 1/4 oz. Onza is the first purchase which appears rough for a B.U. coin. Obverse has scratch or slight flaw, reverse has small ding, perhaps this is normal for the 1981 year series. Coin looks great from a distance but not up close with magnifying glass. Overall I'm happy with your service, packaging, information, etc.

A good value!

Was this review helpful? Yes/ No

These coins are a great value and sport a beautiful design but they don't shine as brilliantly as other coins in my collection. There were also some minor discolorations on the coins I received but not so terrible as to mar the overall beauty of the coin. They are still a wonderful addition to my growing collection and I am very glad that I purchased them.

Bad sample?

Was this review helpful? Yes/ No

This would have been an excellent purchase if it didn't come with a big, dirty spot on one side of it. Although I'm new to collecting precious metals, I have been told that it is not a good idea to clean your coins as you may lower their value. However, I now find myself questioning this piece of advice as I stare into the dark abyss which is the crusty unidentifiable smudge that turns this otherwise beautiful coin into an eye-sore in my collection.
