Product Details
Since its release in 1967 to help market South African gold, the Gold Krugerrand has seen worldwide popularity with a simple, classic design depicting two key South African figures: Paul Kruger and the springbok antelope.

Mint State 1st Year of Issue
This Gold Krugerrand comes from the first year that Krugerrands were minted. Given the fact that only 40,000 Gold Krugerrands minted that year, it makes obtaining a Mint State example just that much harder! This example has been graded Mint State 64 by NGC.

Coin Highlights:
  • Contains 1 oz of gold.
  • NGC encapsulation protects and guarantees the Mint State-63 condition of the coin.
  • Obverse: Depicts Paul Kruger, South Africa’s first and only president, image, along with “South Africa” in Afrikaans and English.
  • Reverse: Displays a springbok antelope, the national animal of South Africa, along with the year of minting and gold weight.
  • Minted by Rand Refinery.

Krugerrand Series
The Krugerrand was the world's first modern gold bullion coin, initially introduced in 1967, and this gold bullion coin series is still a favorite of collectors and investors today. Krugerrands were minted to help promote South African gold to the international markets.

Krugerrands were never given a face value but were made to derive their value from the price of gold at the time they are traded. The Gold Krugerrand is valued around the world due to the highly sought-after design. The gold coin depicts the South African Republic's first president, Paul Kruger.

On the reverse is a springbok, which is the national animal, in addition to the date of minting. On the Krugerrand gold coin, the springbok seems to be jumping into action, while President Kruger is a reminder of 19th century South African political and military affairs. Add one of the most popular gold coins on Earth to your collection and appreciate the luster and beauty of a Gold Krugerrand.

South African Mint
The South African Mint manufactures Proof Gold Krugerrand coins and works with the Rand Refinery to mint the bullion Krugerrand. The mint produces gold coins on behalf of and is a wholly owned subsidiary of the South African Reserve Bank.

In 1886, gold was found near the Witwatersrand area of Johannesburg, which resulted in President Paul Kruger establishing a national mint. Today, the South African Mint is one of the world's top exporting mints. When you buy gold from APMEX, you buy with the peace of mind that your products will be authentic.
