About The Treasures of Australia- Sapphire
The design of the coins from the Treasures of Australia series showcases sapphires. The Australian landscape is one of the wold's more concentrated landscapes for sapphire mining and precious metals. Each coin in the set incorporates a transparent locket containing approximately 1 carat of sapphires. Miners have commercially extracted sapphires in Australia since the 19th century, primarily in Queensland and New South Wales. Normally found in alluvial deposits, they belong to a group second only in hardness to diamonds. They occur in many different colors: orange, yellow, pink and purple. Blue of course is the most known sapphire color.

Sapphires have long been linked with special properties, including wisdom, loyalty and healing. Sapphire is the modern birthstone associated with people born in September. No more than 300 of these two-coin sets were produced by the famed Perth Mint.
