Some carbon spots and obvious wear, but these are to be expected in an average circulated coin. That said, I'm very pleased that almost all of the details are intact. No damage. I'm glad I could choose the monarch image. Not that I ever want to sell it, but on balance, it's a good value when comparing premiums and sell prices of various gold coins. I like that the coin has history.
- Pros
- Attractive Design
- Easy to Sell
- Recognized Brand
- Bottom Line
- Yes, I would recommend this to a friend.

I'm very pleased with my "Veil Head" sovereign. The one that I received is an 1899. The description said it is in "average circulated" condition and that's what I got, but not bad at all considering it's 116 years old! I'm slowly building a collection of sovereigns and enjoy adding the different varieties when I purchase. Therefore, I usually opt for a specific variety rather than the "random" option offered by APMEX, even though "random" is the most economical way to buy these beauties. I select an AU or BU version of the later date varieties but for the 19th and early 20th century ones, I go with average circulated to keep the premium low. The collecting aspect of this is fun, but my primary goal for sovereign purchases is adding to to my bullion holding. I'm willing to pay a bit of a numismatic premium, but not as much as a Veil Head would cost for an AU or BU specimen. This one is just fine. Love having this particular variety for the collection but still got it for a relatively low premium. It's a great piece of history! Not sure which sovereign I'll choose for my next purchase. Think I'll go shop right now!

I am very pleased with this little baby. Mint year I received was 1893. It's definitely in circulated condition, but not bad for all that - some scuffs on Queen Vicky's portrait but that's about it, and St George on the reverse looks really sharp. The best thing about this is that while many bullion sites offer gold sovereigns they all have just one listing with year/monarch of their choice, while APMEX lets you choose which monarch's portrait you wish and that is what made up my mind to go with APMEX. This is not only an interesting piece of British monetary history but a good place to start either your gold collection or your coin collection, a very nice piece at a pretty decent price.
