Gollum and the Lord of the Rings
Gollum's life is a sad story. He was not so different from a hobbit once. Long ago, his name was once Smeagol. His cousin and friend, Deagol stumbled upon the ring of power in a river and the two fought over it. The ring drove Smeagol to kill Deagol and take it for himself. After this, he was outcast by his people. Eventually he would make his way to the Misty Mountains and go deep into the darkest caves and use the ring of power to stealthily hunt orcs and other things to survive. For over 500 years, the ring kept Smeagol alive and transformed him into a ghoulish looking creature who became so attuned to the ring that he was no longer able to be separated from it. It was through Smeagol, then Gollum, that Bilbo found the ring and was able to pass it on to Frodo. Without Gollum's reckless obsession for the ring of power, Frodo may not have had the will to destroy the ring on his own.
