About NASA
The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) is an independent agency of the U.S Federal Government responsible for scientific achievements in human spaceflight, aeronautics research and satellite applications with widespread impacts on our nation and world at large. This organization was built upon the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics’ (or NACA) shoulders; its legacy still carries forth today with NASA’s success stories spilling over into new frontiers while inspiring others who wish to explore what lies beyond Earth.

About the Meatball Logo
The famous meatball logo was designed by James Modarelli in 1959 and was used through 1975. The meatball was originally designed to suggest the agency's ability to move the country forward into new frontiers. In the classic "meatball" design, the sphere represents a planet, the stars represent space, the red chevron is a wing representing aeronautics, and an orbiting spacecraft is pictured going around the wing. The logo didn't coin its name "meatball" until 1975, when NASA decided to go with a more modern logo — the retro worm logo.
