About NASA
The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) is an independent agency of the U.S. federal government and is responsible for unique scientific and technological achievements in human spaceflight, aeronautics, space science and space applications that have had widespread impacts on our nation and the world. NASA was built on the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA), and other government organizations, as the locus of U.S. civil aerospace research and development.

About Retro Worm Logo
NASA used the popular "worm" logo, which features a red stylized rendering, from 1975 until 1992. It was created by Richard Danne and Bruce Blackburn in 1974 and was introduced in 1975 to bring in a bit of modernity to replace the circular blue, white and red insignia, aka the "meatball" that James Modarelli designed in 1959. There have been conversations for years about the "return of the worm" and the insignia is now used for special occasions and commercial merchandising purposes.
