Marcus Tullius Cicero and the Right to Keep and Bear Arms
Marcus Tullius Cicero was a Roman statesman who lived from 106 BC to 43 BC. He was respected for his brilliant mind, and throughout his life he put it to use as a lawyer, scholar, philosopher and academic skeptic. Cicero was known for his prolific writing and opinions on everything from philosophy to politics and rhetoric. Cicero is regarded as one of Rome’s most renowned orators and prose stylists and is credited with elevating Latin to be used in the academic realm.

The great thinker was a lawyer and politician in his lifetime and was a key player in many historic moments of the Roman Empire. For example, he contributed to stopping an attempted coup and later, during Julius Caesar’s tumultuous rule, Cicero advocated for a return to a traditional style of republican government.

Cicero’s philosophy and republican stance inspired the Founding Fathers of the United States. Thomas Jefferson is even reported as saying that Cicero was one of the few major historical figures that he drew from when he was drafting the Declaration of Independence. Cicero was for every individual’s right to bear arms so that they could act in self-defense and the defense of the people against tyranny.
