2024 Niue 1 oz Gold Icons of Inspiration: Johannes Gutenberg BU
The eighth release in the popular series of coins celebrating famous Icons of Inspiration features Johannes Gutenberg, one of the most influential printers and innovators of the information revolution of the 15th century. Gutenberg's many improvements to the printing press made the process faster and more efficient.
This release includes 10,000 silver BU, 100 proof silver and 100 gold BU coins designed by the esteemed artist Joel Iskowitz. Ten of the proof silver and gold BU coin certificates of authenticity are signed by Joel Iskowitz to add an extra level of appeal. The obverse depicts Gutenberg looking out and holding a book in addition to him working his printing press and German writing in the background. The reverse shows a majestic muse stretching one hand to the sun and resting her other on the Niue nation’s seal. The year and denomination are also included around the design.
Johannes Gutenberg
Gutenberg's printing press played a transformative role in the Renaissance, facilitating the rapid speed of knowledge, ideas, and literature throughout Europe. His innovation allowed for the mass production of books by arranging movable metal type of a press, significantly reducing the time and cost of producing written material.
His first major work, the Gutenberg Bible or 42-line Bible, was printed around 1455 and became one of the earliest books produced using the movable type. This technological breakthrough revolutionized communication, education, and the dissemination of information, marking the advent of the printing revolution and laying the foundation for the democratization of knowledge. Johannes Gutenberg's contributions to the printing press had a profound and lasting impact on the course of human history.
