The History of the Royal Canadian Mint

The Royal Canadian Mint (RCM) is a federal Crown corporation in Canada that was founded in 1908. Its original purpose was to produce the gold sovereign coins of the British Empire, which were used as currency in Canada and other British colonies. In 1931, the RCM became the exclusive issuer of Canadian coins, and in 1976, it began minting coins for other countries as well.

Throughout its history, the RCM has been at the forefront of technological innovation in the minting industry. In the 1970s, the RCM became the first mint in the world to produce gold coins that were 99.99% pure, paving the way for other mints to produce high-purity gold coins.
