Australia's Perth Mint introduced the Gold and Silver Koala series in 2007. Each year has featured a unique design of this animal that is associated with Australia. Australian Silver Koala coins are produced in both 1 oz Silver and 1 kilogram size, with the mintage of the 1 oz size capped at just 300,000 coins. This makes the Australian Silver Koala one of the most collectible bullion coin series. The koala, along with the kookaburra, lunar series and kangaroo form what has continued to be a world renowned line of high quality bullion products from The Perth Mint.

Early European settlers initially confused these new, tree-climbing animals with monkeys or bears, which is why some people still refer to the creatures as koala bears.
