This coin was the first commemorative coin of the 1920's and was minted to honor the 100th anniversary of Maine's Admission as a State into the Union in 1820. It was the second State, after Illinois in 1918, to commemorate its statehood in commemorative coin form. Maine officially became a State in 1820 after a referendum was created and voted upon by its residents. As a result, Maine was officially granted statehood by the Missouri Compromise and admitted as a "free" State while Missouri was admitted as a "slave" State. Maine was the 23rd State to join the Union.
This half dollar was designed by Anthony de Francisci, who also designed the Peace Silver Dollar. The obverse depicts the Maine State Seal while the reverse has "MAINE CENTENNIAL 1820 - 1920" within a pine cone wreath. Unfortunately, due to the time it took to pick a design, mint, and distribute, the festivities for the centennial were nearly over and a large majority of them were put into circulation. Because of this, there are many examples that are well worn or show light friction. Mint State examples are rare, especially in MS-65 and above. Original issue price was $1.00.
