1938 Walking Liberty Half Dollar PF-67 NGC
Adolph A. Weinman, the designer of the famous Walking Liberty Half Dollar, was born in Germany in 1870. He came to the United States at 14 and, after a brief career as an assistant to Augustus Saint-Gaudens, Weinman opened his own studio in New York City where he produced a wide variety of works in different mediums including sculpture, medals and coins. His most famous works include the "Miss Liberty" statue on Ellis Island and the " Wisdom" and "Power" sculptures at the U.S. Treasury Building in Washington D.C.
The Walking Liberty Half Dollar was first minted in 1916 and was produced until 1947 in small numbers. The coin is considered one of the most beautiful designs ever to appear on a coin. The coin's obverse features a portrait of Liberty walking towards the sun with her right arm extended and her left arm clutching a bundle of branches. The reverse depicts an eagle perched on a rock with its wings spread open.
