South Korean Chiwoo Cheonwang Silver Metals
The South Korean Chiwoo Cheonwang silver medals are a series of silver bullion coins produced by KOMSCO (Korea Minting, Security Printing and ID Card Operating Corporation), the official mint of South Korea. The Chiwoo Cheonwang series was introduced in 2016 and features designs inspired by Korean mythology and history.
Who is Chiwoo Cheonwang?
Chiwoo Cheonwang is a legendary figure from Korean and Chinese folklore who is considered the God of War. In Chinese he is referred to as Chiyou. Chiwoo Cheonwang is known for his bravery and leadership in battles. The design of the coins displays various depictions of Chiwoo Cheonwang, typically shown in full armor with weapons. The first four coins show him preparing to take his soldiers to battle, then it progresses to him riding a horse into batter, the latest coin shows him surveying the aftermath of the battle.
What is a Guimyeonwa?
One side of the coin depicts Guimyeonwa on a clay rooftop tile. Guimyeonwa is thought to ward off bad spirits and are often seen on Korean rooftops. A similar design is depicted on the silver Doggaebi Chiwoo Shield.
