The certificate of authenticity has an antique feel that coincides nicely with both the finish of the 2 oz coin and the design subject. Included on the certificate is an image of Gustave Doré's "Jesus Scourged", showing how accurately Scottsdale Mint's creative team recreated the original artwork for this coin series.
The artist Doré's rendering of Jesus' flogging during the trial leading up to his crucifixion, though tragic, is not as gruesome looking as many of us expected. History reveals to us that the Romans employed three types of whipping, each with an increasing degree of severity. Level One was a moderate beating for minor offenses. Level Two was a severe flogging for more serious crimes. Finally, Level Three was the most brutal, inhumane form of punishment. It was too horrific to describe with words, let alone visualize. This form of scourging was generally reserved for condemned criminals as a prelude to crucifixion.
