Shoebill Stork
The shoebill gets its name from the shape of its large bill being similar in size and shape to that of a standard shoe. At full height, the adult stork stands up to 5 feet tall and has a wingspan of 8 feet. Their appearance is reminiscent of a prehistoric dinosaur or ancient terror bird. Found primarily in the wetlands of East Africa, the "king of the swamps" is a solitary bird that uses its massive beak to hunt prey. These birds are known for the rapid clicking of their beaks, which can sound like machine gun fire in the distance. With habitat loss and hunting, these birds are becoming increasingly endangered.
