The denomination of "peso" was introduced in Mexico in during the Second Mexican Empire to replace the traditional Spanish 8 reales coins used at the time. After the fall of the Empire, the restored Mexican Republic briefly continued minting Pesos, but reintroduced the 8 reales in 1873. This brief run of coins from 1869-1873 was the first Mexican peso coins produced. After the reintroduction of the 8 reales, the denomination would not be used again until 1898.
