Journey back to the American West with this remarkable 1883-CC Morgan Dollar, graded MS-66 by PCGS. Struck at the fabled Carson City Mint, this coin embodies the spirit of a silver boom and the unique allure of frontier coinage.
Imagine the dusty trails and bustling mining towns of 1883, where the Carson City Mint, a beacon of the American West, was busy transforming raw Comstock Lode silver into coinage. This very 1883-CC Morgan Dollar, with its distinctive "CC" mint mark, carries the legacy of that era. Operated for just 16 non-consecutive years between 1870 and 1893, the Carson City Mint produced a limited number of coins, making those bearing its mark particularly special to collectors today.
The creation of the Morgan Dollar itself was a direct result of the Bland-Allison Act of 1878, which mandated the U.S. Treasury to purchase and coin a substantial amount of silver each month. This act effectively brought the silver dollar back into widespread circulation and ushered in the design crafted by British-born engraver George T. Morgan. On the obverse, his iconic depiction of Lady Liberty, modeled after Philadelphia schoolteacher Anna Willess Williams, gazes left, adorned with a Phrygian cap intertwined with wheat and cotton, symbolizing America's agricultural prosperity. Thirteen stars encircle the design, alongside the year "1883" and the motto "E PLURIBUS UNUM." The reverse presents a powerful bald eagle with outstretched wings, clutching an olive branch and arrows, signifying peace and defense, above the inscription "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "IN GOD WE TRUST." The denomination, "ONE DOLLAR," is clearly displayed below the eagle, with the sought-after "CC" mint mark nestled just above it.
This particular 1883-CC Morgan Dollar stands out, having been certified in a superb Mint State 66 (MS-66) grade by PCGS. With an original mintage of 1,136,000 pieces, finding examples in such a high state of preservation can be a challenge. Crafted with 0.7734 troy ounces of pure silver (90% silver and 10% copper, for a total weight of approximately 0.8593 troy ounces), this 38.1 mm diameter coin served as genuine currency during a formative period of American expansion. Its excellent condition allows for a vivid appreciation of George T. Morgan’s intricate artistry and the historical significance of the Carson City Mint, connecting you directly to a significant period in American numismatic history.
