These 8 Reales were one of the most commonly used coins facilitating global exchange during the 19th century, seeing widespread use in trade as far away as the Orient. Due to the longstanding history and stability of the Spanish coinage, these coins even circulated widely in the United States in competition with America's own Silver dollars.
Introduced in 1823, the Cap and Rays design was used on the 8 Reales and the Peso until 1910. These are problem coins which may be holed, exhibit cleaning or have other problems.
Coin Highlights:
- Contains .7859 oz Silver, and are slightly larger than a U.S. Silver dollar.
- Coins will be in protective packaging, and dates may vary from 1823-1897.
- Obverse: Mexican coat of arms featuring a golden eagle perched atop a cactus, devouring a snake.
- Reverse: Radiant Phrygian cap, symbolic of liberty, with denomination, mint mark, date, assayer initials and composition below.
- Produced at a variety of mints throughout Mexico from 1823 to 1897, when the Spanish Real was replaced by the Mexican Peso.
