The "REPUBLIC - Bound for New Orleans from New York with passengers and commercial cargo, the sidewheel steamship SS Republic was lost in a violent hurricane on October 25, 1865. In August 2003, Odyssey located the shipwreck at a depth of approximately 1,700 feet in the Atlantic Ocean about 100 miles east of Savannah, Georgia. During archaeological excavation of the site, coins were picked up individually by the Remotely Operated Vehicle "ZEUS" with a delicate silicone limpet to protect the coin's surfaces. Each coin was carefully conserved and encased in a tamper-resistant holder with a unique bar-code label from Numismatic Guaranty Corporation.

From the very start of my interest in collecting American silver, I knew about the story of the SS Republic, its history as a ship that was connected to both the Union and Confederacy, and its eventual loss beneath the waves of the Gulf of Mexico, along with its precious cargo of gold and silver, and had always wanted to own an example of a coin from the wreck. I can safely say that the one I received is seriously cool! Despite the unique weathering sea water brings to coins over time, it became apparent that the coin I received must have been barely circulated at all before it was consigned to its fate below the waves - it's in outstanding condition. Top marks, I say! I think I might buy a few more of these when I next have the chance :)

Your saying “your purchase will meet the quality of the product shown” for the price listed was the best deal I found after looking for several years. Now for what I received looked nothing like your photo especially the obverse. At most the obverse shows barely 10% of the details that are depicted on your site. The only way one can tell the date is from the NGC holder. At this price one should be able read the coins year or at least most of the 4 numbers.
- Pros
- Recognized Brand
- Cons
- Poor Condition
- Bottom Line
- No, I would not recommend this to a friend
