This scarce coin was minted by the Byzantine Empire following the rise of Venice as one of the most important maritime trading powers. These issues were likely made to help Byzantine coins gain acceptance in local markets.
Coin Highlights:- AR Basilicon from the reign of Andronicus II & Michael IX co-emperors (1294- 1320 AD), (20 mm around 2.2 g). Byzantine Silver coinage is more scarce than the Bronze or Gold.
- This coin is an imitation of the Silver grosso of Venice.
- NGC has certified and authenticated this example as being in Choice About Uncirculated condition.
- Strike: Surface ratings will vary.
- Obverse: Christ enthroned.
- Reverse: Two emperors standing holding a labrum between them.
- Sear 2402.
