  • Product Details
Step back in time with the iconic 1878 Morgan Dollar is graded MS-61 by PCGS and features the rare and historically significant "8 Tail Feathers" reverse.

America in 1878 was a nation still healing from the Civil War and navigating a booming industrial age. This was the year the legendary Morgan Dollar was born, not out of quiet contemplation, but from a fiery political battle over silver. The Bland-Allison Act, passed in February of that year, mandated the U.S. Treasury to buy millions in silver each month and turn it into dollars. It was a lifeline for Western silver mines and a symbol of the "Free Silver Movement," challenging the gold standard.

Into this dynamic scene stepped George T. Morgan, a young British engraver recruited to modernize American coinage. His genius gave us the timeless design we cherish today. On the obverse, his interpretation of Lady Liberty, modeled on Philadelphia schoolteacher Anna Willess Williams, gazes left, adorned with a Phrygian cap and a wreath of cotton and wheat, symbolizing American agriculture and industry. It's a striking portrait of strength and hope. However, it's the reverse of this particular 1878 Morgan Dollar that tells a unique tale. Morgan's initial design for the eagle featured a prominent eight tail feathers (8 TF). Production began on March 12, 1878, at the Philadelphia Mint (indicated by the absence of a mint mark). Yet, almost as quickly as they were struck, the mint realized eagles on U.S. coinage traditionally had an odd number of tail feathers, often seven. This "anatomically incorrect" design, as some called it, led to an immediate order for a change.

This MS-61 PCGS certified coin represents that fleeting, original vision. With an estimated mintage of only around 749,500 to 750,000 pieces for the 8 TF variety before the dies were altered, it stands as a rare artifact of a design quickly superseded. Later, some dies were even overpunched to create the "7 over 8 Tail Feathers" variety, further highlighting the rush to correct the initial design. Owning this 1878 8 TF Morgan Dollar is a tangible link to a pivotal moment in American numismatic history. Crafted from .900 fine silver, it contains 0.7734 troy ounces of pure metal, measures 38.1 mm in diameter, and has a thickness of 3.1 mm, carrying the face value of one dollar. It's an essential cornerstone for any serious collector looking to capture the authentic, foundational story of the iconic Morgan Dollar series.
