Product Details
This 1884-O Morgan Dollar, graded MS-64 by PCGS, isn't just a coin; it's a direct connection to America's dynamic post-Civil War era. Struck at the historic New Orleans Mint, it embodies the nation's silver standard debates.
Imagine stepping back into 1884, a time when America was booming, and the debate over silver versus gold was raging across the country. This very 1884-O Morgan Dollar, graded a sparkling MS-64 by PCGS, was born right in the heart of that era, fresh from the presses of the legendary New Orleans Mint. With a substantial original mintage of 9,730,000, these coins were the workhorses of commerce, fueling the economy and reflecting the political tensions of the Bland-Allison Act, which mandated their production.
The 'O' mint mark tells its own story, signifying its origin at the historic New Orleans Mint, a facility that played a crucial role in the nation's coinage, especially silver dollars, after resuming operations post-Civil War. While New Orleans mintages are known for sometimes having weaker strikes, this MS-64 example has beautifully preserved details, a testament to its journey through time. Holding this 0.7734 troy oz of .900 fine silver, with its 38.1 mm diameter, you're not just holding a coin; you're holding a piece of the "Wild West" and the booming silver mining industry it supported.
Let's talk about the design, which is absolutely iconic. On the obverse, you'll find the stunning profile of Lady Liberty, a truly modern interpretation for its time, modeled by a Philadelphia schoolteacher, Anna Willess Williams. She wears a Phrygian cap adorned with "LIBERTY" and surrounded by an agricultural wreath of cotton and wheat, symbolizing American prosperity. Above her, "E PLURIBUS UNUM" declares national unity, with the "1884" mint year proudly displayed below.
Flip it over, and the reverse showcases a majestic bald eagle with outstretched wings, clutching both an olive branch for peace and arrows for strength. The inscriptions "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "IN GOD WE TRUST," and "ONE DOLLAR" encircle this powerful device, alongside the unmistakable 'O' mint mark for New Orleans. Designed by the talented George T. Morgan, this dollar isn't just currency; it's a miniature work of art and a powerful symbol of American heritage, making it an essential acquisition for collectors who appreciate both historical depth and numismatic beauty.

Got a green holder instead of a blue in the picture. A little disappointed there but the coin was definitely MS64. Substitutions are a possibility so I do understand. At least it's not a rattler.
