The park contains the tallest sand dunes in North America, rising about 750 feet (230 m) from the floor of the San Luis Valley on the western base of the Sangre de Cristo Range, covering about 19,000 acres (7,700 ha). Researchers say that the dunes started forming less than 440,000 years ago.

ordered a BU encapsuleated (aprox. 80 dollars over spot).Recieved an un-encapsulated scruffy piece. This was about my 40 th order, first time a problem..Customer service useless. I will still buy from apmex, but little things mean a lot. We all make errors but the rep. just was. I don't know..OUT TO LUNCH!
- Cons
- Hard to Sell
- Poor Condition
- Bottom Line
- No, I would not recommend this to a friend
Merchant response: Our Returns Team will be in contact with you to discuss the issue.

I got this one on sale at APMEX. This isn't a well known park, but the mintage on Great Sand Dunes was very low, so hopefully the value will go up. The design isn't the most exciting, but I don't think it's bad at all. The coin is pretty clean, though like most of the others, the blank areas seem a little dusty (not actual dust). No streaks. And it is great that APMEX ships these in a capsule while most sellers do not.
- Pros
- Value (low premium over spot)
- Attractive Design
- Collectible (lower mintage)
- Recognized Brand
- Bottom Line
- Yes, I would recommend this to a friend.

Got my 2014 5 Oz Sand Dunes coin today, and I am VERY impressed! The finish on the bullion version is fantastic, and I received an excellent strike. Crisp details, it has a shine unlike my 2015 ATB 5 Oz coins. Has a lower mintage than most, and I feel that that will help this increase in value later on. APMEX sent it in an air tite, which is such a nice bonus. I buy some items via credit card and some by personal check, and have found APMEX does a fantastic job processing both. They have a winning formula when it comes to logistics.
- Pros
- Attractive Design
- Collectible (lower mintage)
- Mint Condition
- Recognized Brand
- Easy to Sell
- Bottom Line
- Yes, I would recommend this to a friend.
Merchant response: Great feedback. Thank you!

Always hoping ATB 5oz will grade at least MS68. So when one comes back from ANACS as MS69 I am quite happy, let alone DMPL! Carefully handling these straight out of tubes and packaging these early can make quite a difference as they can mark easy due to the size and weight if not handled properly.
- Pros
- Mint Condition
- Bottom Line
- Yes, I would recommend this to a friend.
