Pre-1933 Gold:
The U.S. Mint issued its first Gold coins in 1795. During the height of the Great Depression in 1933, President Franklin Roosevelt prohibited American citizens from holding monetary Gold. He ordered all Gold coins be returned to the U.S. Treasury, where millions were melted into Gold and then cast into Gold bars. This was an unprecedented act to help fight the Great Depression. By doing so, many collectible Gold coins were affected and the course of history for monetary Gold was changed forever.

These federal government recalls and meltdowns made these previously common Gold coins very rare. Today, the surviving Pre-1933 Gold U.S. coins are fixed at an extremely limited supply. This fact has made Pre-1933 Gold coins some of the most desirable items among investors and collectors. APMEX is proud to offer a superb selection of these harder-to-find classic coins. The historical significance of these coins is vitally important and will provide diversity and significance to any investment or collection.

$20 Gold Coin Design:
Several changes were made to the $20 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle design during the years the series was in production. The coins issued from 1907-1908 do not include the motto "In God We Trust," which was not added until later. In 1912, the number of stars surrounding Lady Liberty on the obverse changed from 46 to 48 when New Mexico and Arizona became states.

Beautiful Coin! A delight to the eye!

The promise of a BU coin was fully realized! With a minimum of the to-be-expected bag marks, both sides of this beauty are practically aglow with a gorgeous Mint State luster. I might wish for a little heavier strike, but I am delighted. As usual, APMEX delivered another beautiful coin!

Very happy critical buyer

The BU 1927 Saint-Gaudens I received was everything I expected. The detail and luster make this coin a joy to own and look at. I had always wanted one so 64 years later I know have one and I'm am glad that I chose Apmex. The coin was packaged extremely well. The outer box held a nicely made Apmex foam lined box inside and in that box was a bubble pack envelope and in that a flip containing my coin. I ordered Tues. and have my coin on Thursday. There was a small premium to Apmex from another site I bought from but now after seeing how Apmex selects and ships the product it's not really a premium but a better class of service and care. With that said I'd rather pay the few dollars and get the Apmex treatment. I'm looking forward to ordering again.

  • Attractive Design
  • Collectible (lower mintage)

Beautiful BU 1908 no motto Double Eagle

Was this review helpful? Yes/ No

Random year order produced a beautiful specimen, definitely in BU condition, 1908 with no motto. 1908 was a high mintage year for the DE but I'm pleased with the condition. But, random means random and so I got what I bargained for and the price was right. Satisfied again.

  • Pros
  • Value (low premium over spot)
  • Attractive Design
  • Easy to Sell
  • Mint Condition
  • Cons
  • Common (higher mintage)
  • Bottom Line

A price of history

Was this review helpful? Yes/ No

I purchased the St Gaudens Double Eagle as well as the Indian Eagle. The coins coins I received were in as advertised condition. I love both designs. Although I think the premium on early U.S. Gold coins is high, I also think they are some of the most beautiful coins out there. It's like owning a piece of history.

  • Attractive Design
  • Easy to Sell
