Barber Quarters
Designed by Mint Engraver Charles Barber, the Barber quarter became a prominent aspect of everyday life for Americans at the end of the 19th Century. It was originally intended that a public contest would be held to choose the design for the new twenty-five cent piece. Charles Barber spent decades as Chief Engraver at the Philadelphia Mint, where he worked alongside the engraver George T. Morgan. Morgan had come from England in 1876 and designed the silver dollar that replaced the Trade Dollar, the work of Charles's father, William Barber. Struck from 1878 to 1921, Morgan's dollar became one of the most widely collected coins the Mint ever produced.
