  • Product Details
This 1892-O Morgan Dollar, graded MS-63+ by PCGS, offers a glimpse into a dynamic period of American history. Struck at the historic New Orleans Mint, it embodies the legislative push for silver coinage amidst an evolving national economy.

Imagine America in 1892: a nation grappling with economic shifts, where the production of silver dollars was not just about commerce, but about political will and the future of currency. This 1892-O Morgan Dollar, with its "O" mint mark from the New Orleans Mint, emerged from this very era. Its creation was a direct outcome of acts like the Bland-Allison Act and the later Sherman Silver Purchase Act, legislation designed to boost the silver industry and inject more currency into the economy. Yet, this led to an abundance of silver dollars, many of which sat in Treasury vaults, eventually contributing to the economic uncertainty that culminated in the Panic of 1893.

The New Orleans Mint holds a special place in U.S. coinage history, being the only Southern mint to strike the Morgan Dollar after its reopening following the Civil War. Though it produced 2,744,000 of these dollars in 1892, many were either circulated heavily or later melted down. Finding one like this, certified MS-63+ by PCGS, in such excellent condition, is a real treat. It showcases the distinctive characteristics often found in New Orleans-minted coins from that time, including potential variations in strike quality, making sharply detailed examples particularly appealing. The coin measures 38.1 mm in diameter and 3.1 mm in thickness, with a substantial weight of 1.8 troy ounces of .900 fine silver, contributing to a total metal content of 0.7734 troy ounces of pure silver, carrying a face value of one dollar.

The artistry of this dollar belongs to George T. Morgan, an English-born engraver recruited by the U.S. Mint to modernize American coinage. His design for Lady Liberty on the obverse, famously modeled by Philadelphia schoolteacher Anna Willess Williams, captures a sense of strength and grace, adorned with a Phrygian cap, wheat, and cotton, encircled by the motto "E Pluribus Unum" and thirteen stars. The reverse features a powerful heraldic eagle clutching both an olive branch and arrows, symbolizing peace and preparedness. This combination of historical context, minting location, and masterful design makes the 1892-O Morgan Dollar a compelling collectible for anyone fascinated by America's monetary evolution and the tangible assets that chronicle its past.
