This 1879-S Morgan Dollar, graded MS-67 by NGC, represents a truly exceptional example from the San Francisco Mint. It’s a remarkable piece of American coinage, capturing the spirit of the Wild West and the nation's silver boom.

Imagine America just after the Civil War, expanding westward, fueled by newfound silver riches from places like Nevada's Comstock Lode. That's the exciting backdrop for the Morgan Dollar, a coin that quickly became an icon. This particular 1879-S dollar hails from the legendary San Francisco Mint, a facility at the heart of the silver mining boom. With a substantial mintage of 9,110,000 pieces that year, the San Francisco Mint was working overtime to turn raw silver into circulating currency.

Designed by George T. Morgan, this dollar showcases his artistic vision. The obverse features a profile of Lady Liberty, her cap adorned with wheat and cotton, symbolizing agricultural wealth, while the reverse displays a majestic heraldic eagle with outstretched wings, clutching arrows and an olive branch—a classic emblem of national strength and peace. Struck from .900 fine silver, each coin contains 0.7734 troy ounces of pure silver, boasting a diameter of 38.1 mm and a thickness of 3.1 mm, making it a substantial piece of currency for its time.

What makes this specific 1879-S Morgan Dollar truly special is its incredible condition, certified MS-67 by NGC. Finding a Morgan Dollar from the late 19th century in such a high Mint State grade is quite an accomplishment. It means this coin has exceptional luster, sharp details, and virtually no post-minting marks, appearing almost as it did the day it left the San Francisco Mint. For collectors who appreciate both the historical narrative of American expansion and the tangible beauty of a finely preserved silver dollar, this 1879-S Morgan in MS-67 condition offers a fantastic opportunity to hold a part of that era in near-perfect form.

The picture was a bit better than coin

Was this review helpful? Yes/ No

When I first reviewed the coin, and looked at the pictures, I was very impressed. When this 1879S was received, I almost felt this was not the coin as advertised, but, your stock numbers said it was. I am a bit disappointed. On this particular coin, the photographer, I think "enhanced" the coin, rather than getting all of the marks to show. This is the first time I have used APMEX, and I will have to think hard before using you folks again. I am a retired coin dealer and I think I know grading a bit more than the average lad. . Hopefully we can do business in the future if and when I can be assured of an accurate, well defined product Regards
