Pre-1965 90% Silver coins, sometimes referred to as junk Silver or scrap Silver, are a great way to start your Silver investments. These Silver coins were pulled from circulation with the introduction of copper/nickel clad coins and the rising demand of Silver. The public saved them for their 90% Silver content as a rainy day fund they can fall back on.

Just starting to build my silver hoard. This is a great way to add small denomination silver to a collection. In my opinion much better than 1 gram silver bars. My plan is 90% silver including Morgan's and Peace dollars along with American eagles and bar bullion. Buying silver has become addictive!

Pros

  • Easy to Sell

This was the first time I have bought junk silver. I read the reviews and was worried about not getting a variety. I ordered $2 face value to try it out and received quarters ranging from 1943 to 1964. I received a very good variety. Only two from the same year (1964) one was Philly mint and the other was Denver. So I actually got a complete variety! The quality was just as advertised with no complaints from me. And as always AMPEX sent the product very quickly.

Bought 2, received 8 quarters, which is exactly what I paid for. 7 Washington quarters ranging in avg circulated condition to one good looking quarter and one standing liberty quarter (no date very worn). All in all tossed some more silver in my stash and will be back for more! The low price and "gamble" as to what you get make buying these fun.

Pros

  • Value (low premium over spot)
  • Collectible (lower mintage)
  • Easy to Sell

Cons

  • Common (higher mintage)
  • Poor Condition

This was my first time purchasing junk silver from Apmex. I ordered 14 dollars face value and 28 Washington Quarters and 28 Liberty Quarters is what I received. Only 2 of the Liberty Quarters had visible dates. Stacked up next to each other the Liberty Quarters are 1/2" shorter than Washingtons. This is the first time I was not happy with my order. I will order again just not this product.

  • Recognized Brand

Lower quality than expected

I ordered $6.00 worth of 90% silver American coins. The denomination I received was the quarter. I am happy with the condition of all but one of the quarters I received. The condition of the coins is supposed to be average circulation. The quarter in question can not even be dated and all of the fluting is gone. If this is APMEX's idea of average circulation I will not be buying my junk silver through them anymore. Rather, I will buy local so I can inspect what I am buying and not have to trust someone else's judgment. The caption under the picture of this item read "This photograph illustrates the quality of the coin(s) you will receive, not the exact item. "Random Years" coins will be dates of our choosing." Every coin pictured in the ad had a date and lettering that were legible. The only legible word on the coin in question, front or back, is LIBERTY. The only way I am sure it is a 90% silver coin is the way it sounds when taped against another coin. Purchasing through APMEX costs me more overall than purchasing local but I figured the time and hassle saved would be worth the extra cost. Indeed, it would if I could trust I was getting the same quality as the pictured items.

Cons

  • Poor Condition
