Product Details
Journey back to a pivotal era of American history with this beautifully preserved 1888-O Morgan Dollar, graded MS-65 by NGC. It connects to the post-Civil War economic boom.
The year 1888 was a period of robust growth and change in the United States, and the silver Morgan Dollar stood as a shining symbol of this dynamic age. Born from the Bland-Allison Act of 1878, which mandated the Treasury to purchase vast quantities of silver, these majestic coins were instrumental in the nation's monetary system. Designed by the talented English engraver George T. Morgan, this dollar showcases his artistic genius and unique vision for American coinage.
On the obverse, a stunning profile of Lady Liberty gazes leftward, her flowing hair crowned with a Phrygian cap and a headband inscribed "LIBERTY." Morgan famously modeled Liberty after Anna Willess Williams, a Philadelphia schoolteacher, giving the classic figure a distinctly American countenance. The reverse proudly displays a powerful bald eagle, its wings spread, clutching both an olive branch and arrows, signifying peace and preparedness. Above its head, the national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST," is boldly inscribed, alongside the denomination "ONE DOLLAR" and "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA."
This particular coin, an 1888-O issue, was minted at the venerable New Orleans Mint, identified by the "O" mint mark just above "ONE" and below the eagle on the reverse. Having reopened its doors in 1879 after the tumultuous Civil War, the New Orleans Mint played a crucial role in the production of these iconic silver dollars. With a significant original mintage of 12,150,000, the 1888-O is a well-known date, though finding examples in pristine condition, such as this NGC-certified MS-65, can be a delightful challenge. Many New Orleans Mint coins from this era are known for variable strike quality and bag marks due to handling, making this Gem Uncirculated example even more appealing.
Crafted from .900 fine silver, this dollar contains 0.7734 troy ounces of pure silver, boasting a diameter of 38.1 mm and a total weight of 26.73 grams. Owning an 1888-O Morgan Dollar in MS-65 is more than just possessing a precious metal asset; it's holding a piece of American ingenuity and history—a tangible link to the raw energy and economic expansion of the late 19th century, perfect for the collector who appreciates both historical depth and numismatic excellence.
