Step back in time with this stunning 1890-CC Morgan Dollar, certified MS-62 by PCGS. Struck at the storied Carson City Mint, this coin embodies the rugged spirit of the American West, a tangible link to an era of boom towns and silver rushes.
Imagine the dusty streets of Carson City, Nevada, back in 1890. This very coin was struck there, at the famous "CC" mint, a symbol of America's westward expansion and the immense wealth pouring out of the Comstock Lode. The year 1890 was a particularly eventful one, marked by the Sherman Silver Purchase Act, which significantly boosted silver dollar production. Yet, despite a mintage of 2,309,841, these Carson City issues became increasingly scarce, with many later melted down, making surviving examples like this MS-62 PCGS-certified beauty a true find.
Designed by the brilliant English engraver George T. Morgan, this dollar showcases his mastery. The obverse features a graceful profile of Lady Liberty, complete with a Phrygian cap adorned with cotton blossoms and wheat, symbolizing America's agricultural bounty. Interestingly, Morgan used a real person, Anna Willess Williams, as his model, giving Liberty a uniquely American and approachable feel. The reverse displays a powerful bald eagle with outstretched wings, clutching both arrows and an olive branch – classic symbols of national strength and peace. Above the eagle, "In God We Trust" is proudly inscribed.
At 38.1 mm in diameter and 3.1 mm thick, this substantial coin contains .7734 troy ounces of .900 fine silver, a testament to the silver standard of the time. The Carson City Mint itself was a smaller, frontier operation, active for relatively short periods. This limited output, combined with the wild history of the era, is precisely why "CC" mint mark coins are so highly prized by collectors.
Owning an 1890-CC Morgan Dollar isn't just about possessing a beautiful silver coin; it's about holding a piece of the untamed Wild West, a moment frozen in time from one of America's most iconic mints. This particular MS-62 grade from PCGS means it has excellent eye appeal and only minor imperfections under magnification, making it a stellar addition for anyone passionate about American history and iconic coinage.
