The attack on Baltimore Harbor in September of 1814 lasted 25 hours, during which the U.S. troops were able to stave off the British who had finally run out of ammunition. This battle is commemorated by the National Monument and Historic Shrine, which attained national park status in 1925. It has become a tradition that when a new flag is designed, it first flies over Fort McHenry.
