George Rogers Clark National Historical Park
In 1779, 25-year-old General George Rogers Clark led a band of frontiersmen to drive the British from Fort Sackville and claim a vast Appalachian frontier territory equal in size to the original 13 colonies. After the French and Indian War, the British had seized control of the land beyond the colonies and invoked the Proclamation of 1763 to justify sending Native war parties against settlers. Determined to act, Clark secured approval from the governor to launch a major offensive. Following nearly a year of preparation, fierce combat, and endurance, Clark’s forces captured the fort in a decisive victory that expelled the British from the region.
Transferred to the National Park Service in 1966, the site now features the Clark Memorial and stands as a key landmark in America’s westward expansion. Clark’s bold campaign ultimately secured the territory that would become Ohio, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, and Wisconsin under the 1783 Treaty of Paris.
Designed by Frank Morris and engraved by Michael Gaudioso, the coin depicts frontiersmen wading through the floodplain en route to battle. The scene is dynamic and authentic, honoring the determination of early Americans whose grit shaped the frontier, the West, and the nation itself. - Specifications
