The Series 1988-A $1 Federal Reserve Notes hold a special place in paper money history as the first small-size notes to be produced using the experimental Web-Fed Printing Press. Unlike traditional sheet-fed presses that printed one side at a time on 32-subject sheets, the Web Press drew from a continuous roll of paper and printed both the face and back simultaneously. This innovative approach promised to revolutionize production, yet it ultimately proved too unreliable for long-term use.
First introduced in May 1992, Web Press notes were only issued in limited quantities and for a short window before the BEP abandoned the project in 1996. As a result, survivors are far scarcer than their sheet-fed counterparts, especially in original BEP-strapped packs.
Collectors prize these notes not just for their rarity, but for their historical significance as tangible relics of the BEP’s bold attempt to modernize U.S. currency production. A full, untouched strap of Series 1988-A Web Press notes from the F-Atlanta district represents a true prize - combining experimental history, limited production, and original preservation in one highly desirable collectible. A pristine pack like this is practically unheard of today. - Specifications
