This $5 note from the Nemaha Valley Bank is a genuine artifact of Nebraska's territorial banking era, complete with the scarce red "V" overprints and the original signatures of president Thomas L. McKoy and cashier Alexander Hallam. Chartered in 1856 with half the capital required of other banks, the Nemaha Valley Bank lasted barely a year before collapsing in the Panic of 1857, its officers fleeing and its notes trading at a 50% discount before the charter was declared forfeited. Brownville itself, Nebraska's oldest river town, was the territorial epicenter of commerce, and this note circulated at the heart of it. Examples from this scarce territorial issuer seldom reach the market in any grade, let alone in a holder.
Scarce territorial notes with this much backstory, add a piece of Nebraska's founding era to your collection today.
