Series 1928 Federal Reserve Notes were the last backed by Gold, uniquely carrying the clause "Redeemable in Gold on Demand at the United States Treasury, or in Gold or Lawful Money at any Federal Reserve Bank." President William McKinley, the 25th President and champion of American economic prosperity, was a fitting choice for the $500 denomination. Small size $500 Federal Reserve Notes span three series, 1928, 1934, and 1934-A, representing 35 different series and district combinations, with the sole exception of the Series 1934-A Boston $500 of which none were printed. Last printed December 27, 1945, and officially discontinued July 14, 1969, any surviving example is a genuine rarity.
