Founded on May 28, 1831, the City Bank of New Haven entered existence through an unusual arrangement where the Connecticut Assembly required the bank to subscribe to $100,000 in stock of the Hampshire and Hampden Canal Corporation as a condition of its charter. The institution opened for business on June 25, 1832, with early records revealing that 30,000 sheets of bank note paper cost just $750 and engraving plates ran $1,000. The bank operated for decades in largely normal fashion, though it suspended specie payments in 1837 alongside nearly every other institution in the country and faced additional financial difficulties in 1859. When the opportunity arose to reorganize as a National Bank, the City Bank chose to remain a state-chartered institution. It continued operations until August 28, 1915, when it merged into the National New Haven Bank after more than 80 years of Connecticut banking history.
